PERSONAL PLAY:

CBB:

UC Irvine @ Utah Valley 8:00pm EST

UC Irvine has a strong chance to cover +3 because their defensive structure under Russ Turner matches up perfectly against Utah Valley’s turnover-prone, three-heavy offense, which has struggled badly against disciplined DI defenses. The Anteaters’ low turnover rate and strong offensive rebounding give them more total shot attempts, which is crucial in a projected tight game where possessions matter more than raw pace. Star guard Jurian Dixon is in mid-season form and provides the most reliable late-game shot creation in this matchup, giving Irvine a real edge in closing situations. Utah Valley’s efficiency drops sharply against quality opponents, and their DI-only defensive numbers have been extremely poor, making it likely Irvine gets consistent scoring inside the arc. With Turner’s coaching continuity, last year’s NIT finals run, and a roster built for physical, grind-out games, UC Irvine is far more equipped for a close road battle than Utah Valley’s volatile, streak-dependent style. Combine all that with Irvine’s superior net-rating profile and cleaner situational metrics, and the Anteaters not only have value at +3, but a very real path to pulling off the outright upset.
