Rice is in a strong position to cover +9.5 against UAB because they don’t need to win outright, just stay competitive, and their style of play naturally leads to tighter margins. The Owls are comfortable slowing the game down, valuing possessions, and forcing opponents to execute in the half court, which limits UAB’s ability to create separation through tempo. Rice has consistently shown the ability to hang around in games even when overmatched, often keeping deficits manageable by defending the perimeter and contesting shots. UAB may be the better team on paper, but they’ve had stretches this season where their offense stalls, making it difficult for them to consistently extend leads.
