The Padres enter tonight’s matchup against the Giants with strong momentum, sitting at 67–52 and benefitting from key offensive reinforcements and a deep bullpen since the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Giants have been struggling badly at home, posting a 7–17 record at Oracle Park since acquiring Rafael Devers. On the mound, San Diego turns to Nestor Cortes, who despite a high season ERA, has recently dominated in the minors with a 1.00 ERA and excellent strikeout-to-walk numbers, and his fly-ball tendencies play well against this Giants lineup. San Francisco has been one of the league’s weakest teams against left-handed pitching—especially fly-ball pitchers—ranking near the bottom in wRC+ in those matchups.
